Romania is home to some of the most preserved medieval castles and fortresses in the world. Castles built from the 14th to the 18th centuries are strong and austere fortresses, those built beginning in the late 1800s are imposing and luxurious. From castles to fortified churches, from military structures to fortresses built by villagers, Romania features the best Medieval portfolio in the Balkans.  Bran Castle, Fagaras Citadel and Rasnov citadels were built in Transylvania on the border with Wallachia, guarding the important trade routes. Prejmer and Biertan feature beautiful Saxon churches fortified like castles and presenting defensive features similar to a castle. Hunyad Castle is probably the most amazing medieval structure in Transylvania but amongst the most popular castles we should mention as well the elegant 19th century Peles Castle with its 160 rooms filled with priceless European art and the Bran Castle, built in the mid-1300s.

But Romania's castles are alluring, not only for their haunting beauty, but for the legends and history that surround them.
